NiCd or Nickel Cadmium technology is well established, inexpensive, robust and easy to use. Ideal applications include toys, such as remote controlled cars, electronic equipment such as portable cassette players, and any intensive application which would otherwise consume lots of pre-charged batteries.

NiCd Advantages

• Inexpensive
• Can be used for up to 1000 charge/discharge cycles
• Resilient against overcharging

NiCd Disdvantages

• Topping up can cause "memory effect"
• Cadmium is a serious pollutant
• Capacity is limited when compared to more recent technologies
