Battery History - All About Batteries
The first battery was invented by Alessandro Guiseppe Antonio Anastasio Volta just over 200 years ago. On March 24th 1800, he built his 'pile' at the University of Pavia in Italy, thus creating the first source of a continuous electric current, or battery. Clearly, batteries have undergone some significant development since then.
Batteries are intially classified into primary and secondary batteries. All primary batteries are pre-charged, and are designed to be used once and then discarded. Secondary batteries are re-chargeable. Batteries further vary in their cell chemistry (see how batteries work), which impacts their shelf-life, how they behave at different temperatures, the amount of energy or power stored, and how suitable they are to a particular application.
